Bowie County Court Record Requests
Start with the record, not just a person’s name. The District Clerk keeps district civil, family, felony, and County Court at Law records. The County Clerk keeps probate, guardianship, vital, and real-property material. JP and municipal clerks keep their own cases. Online, in-person, mail, and phone routes are all useful, but the county Tyler portal expressly does not display documents.
- Identify the cause or citation number, court, case type, document, and date.
- Check the official index or calendar to confirm the right custodian.
- Call the office if the court or copy format is uncertain.
- Submit the request at the counter or by mail with contact details and the requested format.
- Pay the quoted search, copy, and certification charges before release.
The District Clerk office is at 710 James Bowie Drive, New Boston, Texas 75570, and lists weekday hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Phone 903-628-6750 before travel when a file may be archived or held elsewhere.
Two Bowie County Clerk Lanes
Bowie County uses separate elected clerk functions. District Clerk Lori Caraway’s office is the local route for district and County Court at Law case files. The County Clerk, reached at 903-628-6740, handles probate, guardianship, real property, vital records, and other county-clerk services. A County Court at Law case can still route through the District Clerk, so “county court” does not automatically mean County Clerk.
| Record | First custodian | Access clue |
|---|---|---|
| District civil, family, felony | District Clerk | County Tyler index, then copy request |
| County Court at Law misdemeanor | District Clerk | CCL docket and clerk route |
| Probate and guardianship | County Clerk | Ask whether indexed online or by request |
| JP or city case | Issuing court clerk | No unified county system found |
The official County Clerk page shows its distinct service and payment lane.
The source capture reinforces why custody and fees must stay tied to the correct Bowie County clerk.
That split affects fees too. The District Clerk civil schedule is not a probate fee list or a municipal copy schedule.
Kinds of Court Records
A docket is an index or hearing list. The court record behind it may hold far more, or access may stop at a public entry. Ask for a named item rather than “all records” when possible.
- Docket sheets, case histories, and hearing calendars
- Petitions, answers, motions, and other pleadings
- Signed orders, judgments, and dispositions
- Filed exhibits and attachments when releasable
- Plain, electronic, certified, or authenticated copies
Transcripts, archival holdings, appellate records, federal filings, and driver records may require a different office. A calendar event is not a substitute for the signed ruling.
Bowie County Mail Request Checklist
A mailed request should identify the requester, mailing address, phone, email, cause number, court, case type, case style if known, exact document, relevant date range, and requested copy format. Include the purpose if the clerk asks for it. The FAQ allows check or money order by mail and says payment is required before release.
Do not send cash, original papers, a full Social Security number, or a full driver-license number unless a secure official form clearly requires it. Ask for an estimate before ordering a large Bowie County court file. Certification, authentication, redaction, and archive work can change the amount and processing time.
Bowie County publishes specialized District Clerk lines that can narrow the request before it is mailed. Civil filing questions route to 903-628-6766, new petitions to 903-628-6767, child-support matters to 903-628-6759, felony criminal records to 903-628-6753, and misdemeanor criminal records to 903-628-6758. These are routing contacts, not promises that a record will be released by phone. Ask which desk holds the file, whether the exact item can be copied, and how the office wants payment submitted.
Note: The research found no guaranteed Bowie County delivery time for ordinary case-copy requests.
Court Records: What They Contain
Read the file by record type. Each item proves something different, and a short index does not safely support a broad claim about the case.
| Cause number | The court identifier, copied with all letters and suffixes. |
|---|---|
| Pleading | A party’s filed request or response, not a ruling. |
| Setting | A scheduled proceeding that may later move. |
| Order or judgment | A signed court action or final ruling, read on its own terms. |
| Certified copy | A clerk-issued reproduction with certification. |
The 202nd criminal sample used cause, name, offense, and jail-status columns. It was a hearing list, not a full filing register. Jail status was a calendar snapshot, not a live roster.
Bowie County Records Portal Boundary
The District Clerk links the Bowie County Tyler case portal, but the county page says it “does not allow for viewing of documents.” A direct research request also returned HTTP 403. The safe conclusion is narrow: the county identifies an official search destination, yet its live fields were not verified and its public view does not replace the copy desk.
Document needed: Use the portal as a locator, then request the exact Bowie County pleading, order, judgment, or disposition from its custodian.
The statewide re:SearchTX service offers another account-based discovery layer. Coverage and document rights remain court and system dependent. Certified records still come from the originating clerk.
The county calendar supplies a third, narrower view. Its observed controls include start and end dates, a word-or-phrase search, a Show Past Events option, a calendar selector, and List, Week, or Month displays. Event cards may link a docket PDF, but a posted hearing is not proof that the hearing occurred or that a party prevailed. When a calendar entry identifies the court and date, use those facts to sharpen the Bowie County copy request. Ask for the named order or disposition rather than treating the schedule as the final record.
Copy Fees and Certification
A plain copy reproduces a record. A certified copy carries the clerk’s certification, while authentication adds another clerk service. The official District Clerk schedule effective January 1, 2026 separates these charges.
| District Clerk item | Published amount |
|---|---|
| Printed copy | $1 per page |
| Electronic copy, up to ten pages | $1 |
| Each added electronic page | $0.10 |
| Certified copy | Additional $5 |
| Authentication | Additional $5 |
| Record search | $5 per name |
Confirm the current fee and payment form before ordering. The District Clerk page says card payments use Certified Payments with a $2 minimum or 2.9% convenience charge. County Clerk, JP, city, DPS, and federal fees are separate.
Historic Bowie County Case Files
The Texas State Library archive guide identifies Bowie County records on microfilm, including 5th District civil case papers from 1883 through 1901. Those papers can include divorce, name change, naturalization, partition, and removal of a minor’s disability. The guide also warns that early series are incomplete because records were moved twice and affected by fire.
A blank modern search therefore says little about a nineteenth-century case. Give the archive the court, names, date range, and record type. Ask where the film is held and how copies may be made. The UNT collection’s historic courthouse drawing is context, not proof that a current case file remains in that building.
The City of New Boston’s official history adds custody context without replacing the archive catalog. It says a new county courthouse was dedicated in New Boston in 1986 and describes the older 1889 courthouse as abandoned before an arson fire in 1987. Those events help explain why a Bowie County historical search may require an archive or microfilm route. They do not establish that a particular surviving file is public, complete, or stored at the modern courthouse.
Access Rules for Court Records
Public access depends on the record and governing rule. A filed case record, an administrative judicial record, and a calendar entry are not interchangeable. Sealed, redacted, juvenile, family, child-related, protective-order, expunged, and nondisclosed material may have added limits.
Key Texas rules:
Rule of Judicial Administration 12 governs judicial records within its scope and includes request, cost, denial, and review procedures.
Government Code section 552.0035 directs judiciary information to Supreme Court rules and other law.
Civil Procedure Rule 76a supplies a court-record sealing framework and defined exceptions.
The Texas Public Information Act does not guarantee a filed case document through a generic request. Ask the clerk what rule controls the exact item.
Correcting Bowie County Court Records
An index error belongs with the court or clerk that created the record. A payment vendor cannot correct a judgment, and the District Clerk cannot alter a municipal file. Give the custodian the cause or citation number, the disputed field, and the source document that supports correction. Ask for the office’s written process.

Clerk staff can route and copy records but cannot tell a person what pleading to file or what legal result to seek. Federal corrections belong with the federal clerk, and state driver-record corrections follow Texas DPS procedures.
Jurisdiction also decides the correction desk. A municipal citation error belongs with the issuing city clerk, and a JP entry belongs with that precinct. Probate and real-property issues start with the County Clerk. A federal filing uses the Eastern District of Texas or bankruptcy clerk rather than a Bowie County office. Send proof only through the custodian’s approved channel, and retain the date, staff route, and written response with the case papers.
